Jiu Jitsu Mindset

The mindset it takes to succeed in Jiu jItsu its certainly different to many other sports. In fact you could argue without the correct mindset you cannot progress beyond a certain point with your Jiu jItsu training. In this episode of Mat Chats podcast we took a look at how to balance to desire to quit vs the mindset it takes to succeed in your BJJ training.

Mindset Makes a Difference

The journey an average BJJ practitioner takes when training for any length of time is full of highs and lows, probably even more lows than highs due to the particularly high level of difficulty Jiu Jitsu training poses. Everyone goes through all of this period.

One could argue how you respond mentally to the challenge Jiu Jitsu training presents is the difference between those who succeed and those who end of dropping out of BJJ. No matter the level of your Jiu Jitsu training your mindset can be the determining factor and you have to find a way to overcome your bodies natural urge to take the easy route and quick (A.K.A ‘Bitch-ass-ness’).

Jiu Jitsu Training Mindset

Once you are conscious of the fact your mindset has a huge part to do with your jiu jitsu training you can now start to monitor and control it during training. In this episode of our podcast we talk about the difference between a non training orientated mindset vs a more productive training orientate mindset. The key difference between the two, in our opinion, is to do with understanding the distinction between discomfort  and when your body needs to take a break.

The second most important factor in you mindset when training Jiu Jitsu is adaptability. Jiu Jitsu can present some very real challenges, serious injury, seeing little progress for month and even years, and dealing with intense physical stress. To work through all of these hurdles, continue training jiu jitsu and thrive a key factor is adaptability. We discuss training with injury and how to turn these hurdles into positive and productive time.

Someone with a training mindset looks at every class as an opportunity to get better. His or her goal is to leave class better than when he or she walked in. That does not mean submitting everyone. We all have days where nothing is going our way. It’s those days that are the most frustrating. Someone with a training mindset learns from the bad days instead of getting frustrated by them.

In short it is all mind over matter!
