So you’ve signed up for your first No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class — now the big question is: what do you wear? Whether you're stepping onto the mats for fitness, self-defense, or competition, choosing the right gear ensures comfort, safety, and respect for gym etiquette.

What to Wear to No-Gi BJJ Class

1. Rash Guard (Short or Long Sleeve)

A quality rash guard protects your skin from mat burns, bacteria, and friction during rolls. It also helps wick away sweat and keeps training hygienic. Start with one of our BJJ-approved rash guards made for durability and movement.

2. Grappling Shorts or Spats

Wear shorts specifically made for grappling — no pockets, zippers, or hard buttons. These reduce the chance of injury and improve mobility. Spats (compression leggings) are also great for protection and mat hygiene.

3. Flip-Flops or Sandals

Gym etiquette 101: never walk on the mats barefoot after being outside. Bring flip-flops or sandals and wear them right up to the edge of the mat.

What NOT to Wear to No-Gi BJJ

1. Basketball Shorts

They often have pockets and loose fabric, which can cause finger injuries or get caught during training.

2. Cotton T-Shirts

Cotton traps sweat, tears easily, and provides no protection against mat friction.

Smart Optional Gear

  • Mouthguard: Not required, but highly recommended — especially during live rolling.
  • Towel: Helps keep you and your gym environment clean and dry.
  • Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is key, especially during intense training.
