IBJJF Rash Guard Requirements

If you're planning to compete in an IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) tournament, ensuring your gear meets their uniform regulations is crucial. Too many times, competitors don’t make it past the uniform check because their rash guards don’t meet IBJJF’s specific requirements.

Your rash guard must display at least 10% of your belt rank color. The allowed rank colors are white, blue, purple, brown, and black—matching the IBJJF belt system.

Pro tip: Purple can be tricky. Many shades look different depending on lighting. We recommend choosing a rash guard specifically designed for IBJJF competition.

  • Sleeve Length: Both short- and long-sleeve rash guards are permitted. Sleeveless styles are not.
  • Material: Rash guards must be tight-fitting, stretchable, and made from spandex/polyester blends.
  • Branding: Large logos or designs covering most of the rash guard are not allowed. Keep it minimal.

Female Uniform Requirements

In addition to the standard uniform rules, female competitors must wear:

  • A compression shirt or rash guard that meets rank color requirements
  • Compression pants or shorts that meet no-gi regulations

Women may wear full-length leggings under shorts, as long as the shorts themselves are compliant.

Shorts Requirements (No-Gi)

IBJJF-approved no-gi shorts must follow these rules:

  • No pockets (or pockets must be stitched shut)
  • No buttons, zippers, or metal/plastic pieces
  • Length: Must reach at least halfway down the thigh but not past the knee
  • Secure fit: Drawstrings should not be exposed

This applies to both men and women. Any shorts that don’t meet these specs can result in disqualification.

Common Reasons for Disqualification

Here’s what often gets competitors flagged during uniform checks:

  • 🚫 Missing or incorrect belt rank color
  • 🚫 Sleeveless rash guards
  • 🚫 Loose or non-compression material
  • 🚫 Shorts with pockets, zippers, or non-compliant length
  • 🚫 Bright or mismatched rash guard colors outside black, white, and belt rank color
