Choosing the Right BJJ Rash Guard for Training & Competition

When it comes to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) training, having the right rash guard is essential for comfort, performance, and durability. Whether you’re rolling in the gym or stepping onto the competition mats, your jiu jitsu rash guard plays a crucial role. Here’s how to choose the best one for your needs.

1. Jiu Jitsu Rash Guard Fit & Compression Level

A good BJJ rash guard should offer a tight but comfortable fit to prevent excess fabric from getting grabbed. Compression designs improve blood circulation and muscle recovery, but should not restrict movement, making them ideal for both training and competition.

2. BJJ Rash Guard Material & Durability

Look for rash guards made from high-quality polyester and spandex blends. These materials provide moisture-wicking properties, keeping you dry during intense rolls. They should dry quickly and not feel scratchy to the skin. Fabric weight should be a minimum of 180gsm, anything lighter may be prone to tear. Generally higher GSM fabrics are stronger. Reinforced stitching, should be at least a 4-needle flat lock stitch, ensuring the rash guard holds up against constant friction and stretching.

3. IBJJF Rash Guards Requirements

If you’re competing in an IBJJF event, your jiu jitsu rash guard must be at least 10% of your belt color. Always check the tournament’s guidelines before purchasing. Generally covering the shoulders and side panels will satisfy the 10% rash guard requirement

4. Long Sleeve vs. Short Sleeve

  • Long-sleeve BJJ rash guards offer better protection against mat burns and bacteria.

  • Short-sleeve BJJ rash guards allow for more breathability and freedom of movement (and shows off your guns!)

5. Design & Style

Choose a rash guard that represents your style while also being functional. Brands like Nation Athletic balance bold designs, with a modern look that stands out on the mats.

Final Thoughts

Investing in the right BJJ rash guard improves both performance and longevity in training. Prioritize fit, durability, and competition legality to find the best option for your needs.
