Best for: hot climates, travel and lightweight training gis.

BJJ gi weights: what 250, 350, 450 and 550 GSM actually mean.
GSM is just the weight of the jacket fabric. Higher does not automatically mean better. Pick the weight based on heat, feel, durability, competition use and what your members actually like wearing.
Do not overthink the number
The best GSM is the one that fits the job.
A 350 GSM gi can be a better academy uniform than a 550 GSM gi if your gym is hot and people train hard. A heavier jacket can make sense when you want a more substantial premium feel. Start with the use case, not the biggest number.
400–450 GSM
400–450 GSM
The safe middle ground for most academy uniforms. It feels substantial without turning every training session into a sauna.
Best for: general academy uniforms and versatile retail gis.
500–550 GSM
500–550 GSM
Heavier and more substantial. Good when that heavier feel is part of the product you want, but not automatically more durable or higher quality.
Best for: premium-feel gis and buyers who deliberately want a heavier jacket.
GSM is only one part of the build
Two 450 GSM gis can still feel completely different.
Fit, pants fabric, reinforcement, stitching and finishing matter just as much. When we build a custom gi, we spec the whole product instead of treating GSM as the only decision.
