IBJJF gi rules

Need a custom gi for IBJJF competition? Build it to the rules from day one.

Tell us the gi is for IBJJF competition before we start the mockup. We can build the color, fabric, patch plan and measurements around the current uniform requirements instead of trying to fix a non-compliant design later.

The short version

The safest route is to design the gi as a competition gi from the start.

IBJJF checks more than the color. The fabric, collar, sleeve opening, sleeve length, pants length and patch placement all matter. If you tell us the order is for IBJJF competition, we can build the production brief around those rules.

Use an approved base color.

The current IBJJF uniform page allows white, royal blue or black. The jacket and pants must be the same uniform color, and the collar cannot be a different color from the jacket.

Use the right fabric and construction.

The gi must use cotton or cotton-like woven fabric and cannot be so thick or hard that it prevents normal gripping. We can spec a competition-focused pearl-weave build accordingly.

Put patches where they are allowed.

IBJJF only allows patches in authorized areas, and patches must be properly sewn. Send us the academy and sponsor artwork and we can map the placements around the current legal zones.

Fit still has to pass the checker.

IBJJF checks sleeve and pants length plus collar and sleeve-opening measurements. Current published limits include a 1.3 cm lapel thickness, 5 cm collar width and 7 cm sleeve opening at full extension.

The gi top should reach the thigh. Sleeves should finish no more than 2 cm from the wrist with the arms extended, and pants no more than 2 cm above the ankle bone.

Always check the latest rules

Can Nation guarantee an IBJJF inspector will pass it?

No manufacturer can control the final event inspection or future rule changes. What we can do is build the gi around the current published requirements, keep the competition design conservative where needed, and confirm the intended IBJJF use before production.

IBJJF can update its uniform requirements. Athletes and academies should confirm the current rules before competing. IBJJF uniform requirements ↗
