Custom gi design guide

How to design a custom BJJ gi your academy will actually want to wear.

Do not start with logo placement. Start with how the gi should fit, feel and be used. Once the product is right, the graphics are the easy part.

Step 1

First: what is the gi for?

A lightweight training gi for a hot gym should not be built the same way as a premium retail gi or an IBJJF competition uniform. Tell us what the team will use it for and we can steer the build from there.

Hot-climate training

Go lighter and keep the build simple enough that members actually want to train in it every week.

Everyday academy uniform

Balance durability, price and an easy fit across a wide mix of members.

Premium / retail gi

Add more distinctive materials, internal details and finishing when the goal is a higher-end product.

Step 2

Get the fit right before worrying about artwork.

A great logo cannot fix a bad fit. Decide whether you want a fitted competition cut, a roomier training fit or something in between, then confirm the grading across the full size range.

  • Adult sizing A0–A6
  • Women’s sizing available
  • Youth sizing M0000–M4
  • Mixed-size planning for academy orders

Step 3

Choose the jacket and pants as one product.

Jacket GSM matters, but it is not the whole gi. Pants fabric, knee reinforcement, drawcord, stitching and seam finishing all change how the uniform feels and lasts.

Nation can build pearl-weave jackets from 250–550 GSM with ripstop or twill pants, plus reinforcement and custom seam taping.

Step 4

Pick colors based on how the gi will be used.

If the gi is for everyday academy use, you have more freedom. If members will compete in IBJJF events, tell us up front so we can keep the color and decoration plan inside the current competition rules.

Step 5

Then make it look like your academy.

Once the fit and construction are right, add the branding that makes the gi yours.

  • Direct embroidery
  • Woven, PVC, rubber or leather patches
  • Custom seam taping
  • Private labels and size labels
  • Sublimated internal lining for non-competition builds where appropriate

Tell us it is for IBJJF competition. We can build the gi around the current uniform rules for color, fabric, patch placement and measurements.
